PSDI together with ADB’s Office of General Counsel, the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), and other development partners co-hosted the 3rd South Pacific International Arbitration Conference at the Sydney Opera House and online on 16 March 2021. The theme for the conference was “De-Risking Investment in the South Pacific Through a World Class International Arbitration Dispute Regime.”
The final session was moderated by PSDI’s Senior Projects Officer, Mary Kim, and Business Law Reform Team Leader, Terry Reid, alongside ADB Principal Counsel Christina Pak. The session outlined PSDI’s business law reform and foreign direct investment work in the Pacific, including PSDI’s upcoming Pacific foreign direct investment benchmarking survey. PSDI also provided further details on its upcoming work supporting the implementation of the arbitration reform program undertaken by the ADB’s Law and Policy Reform program.
The introduction of stable arbitration mechanisms is key to private sector development in the Pacific, particularly for attracting foreign direct investment.
